The Rosario Islands Plankton Tour
The bioluminescent plankton tour near the Rosario Islands is a 10-hour Barú day by road, ending with a night swim in a lagoon. What it includes, its rating, and the alternative.
The plankton tour carded here is not a boat trip out to the Rosario Islands but a long day on Isla Barú by road: Freedom Beach Club’s Full Day Barú island: Mangrove +Snorkel + Sunset + Plankton runs 10 hours, from Cartagena’s Torre del Reloj to Playa Blanca and a beach club on Barú, and ends after dark with a bioluminescent plankton tour in the Barú lagoon. It is from $66 on promotion, usually $94 a person (checked November 2026) and rated 3.5 out of 5 by 161 reviewers, lower than the island days.
The short answer
Book the plankton day if the night swim is what you came for and a beach-club day on Barú suits you around it. It is the one day carded here with a night program, and it is a full day: about an hour by road each way, the beach club in the afternoon, the sunset, then the lagoon. If the Rosario Islands themselves are the point, the island-hopping day goes out to them by boat and is back in Cartagena by 4:30 PM, with no night program.
What the plankton day includes
The day starts at the Monumento Torre del Reloj in Cartagena, or with the air-conditioned transfer from hotels in the tourist area, and drives about an hour to Barú, where a 5-minute boat ride takes you to Freedom Beach Club. You get a guided hour at Playa Blanca, a regional lunch from three options, three hours of free time at the club with loungers, beach beds and a welcome cocktail, snorkelling, a mangrove tour and the sunset, then the bioluminescent plankton tour in the lagoon, where you swim. The guide speaks Spanish. Not included: towels, the freshwater shower and the tourist assistance insurance required by Colombia’s national parks, which this day prices at 8,800 (pesos). It is not suitable for people with mobility impairments.

What its guests say, and the rating
161 guests have rated the plankton day 3.5 out of 5 on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026), against 4.6 for the island-hopping day and 4.8 for CORALES CARTAGENA's snorkelling day with Playa Blanca. A rating that low on a day with this many parts is worth weighing: read the newest reviews on its page before you book, and book with free cancellation, which the day offers up to 24 hours before it starts.
The night swim: what is and is not known
Parques Nacionales publishes no rule on night visits and no calendar of good or bad plankton nights for the Barú lagoon (checked November 2026). What the day sells is the plankton tour as one item among several, after the sunset. Treat the glow as a bonus on a beach-club day, not a guarantee, and do not book the day for the plankton alone if a poor rating would spoil it for you.
If the islands matter more than the night
The calendar above is Coco Cartagena Tours’ Cartagena: 5-Stop Rosario Islands Tour, Lunch, & Beach Clubs, from $73 on promotion, usually $81 a person (checked November 2026), with 6,600 reviews: the boat out past the Bocachica fort, three island stops of 1.5 hours with beach-club passes and lunch, and back by 4:30 PM. The 31,500 COP port tax is not in its price and is paid in person on the day.
